Rapper Tupac Shakur has shocked and surprised fans, "performing" at a United States music festival 16 years after he died.
The vividly life-like hologram took to the stage at the Coachella music and arts festival in California late on Monday.
As fans looked on in disbelief, the bare-topped star, with pants sagging and neck chain swinging, joined flesh-and-blood rappers Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg on tracks Come With Me, Hail Mary and Gangsta Party.
"That hologram form of tupac look sooooo real! Technology is a beast!" tweeted @iamPink_Lipss, while @AyyOnline added: "This is insane!!"
A November 1994 attack on Shakur in New York triggered a war pitting West Coast stars including Shakur against East Coast rivals represented by rapper Notorious B.I.G, whose real name was Christopher Wallace.
Shakur was shot dead in Las Vegas in September 1996.
Wallace suffered the same fate in Los Angeles six months later.
Both murders remain unsolved.
The annual Coachella festival is being held over two weekends in Indio, east of Los Angeles.
As well as the from-beyond-the-grave rap show, the first weekend also saw British bands Radiohead and Kaiser Chiefs take the stage.
Dr. Dre: Tupac Hologram Only for Coachella
In a backstage video from Coachella, Dr. Dre has clarified that the Tupac hologram was specifically conceived for the festival and not as a first run for a future tour.
“It was strictly for Coachella,” says Dre in the video. “Get it right. I want to get rid of all the rumors out there. This was not done for a tour.” Dre did leave the possibility of a tour open, adding, “If a tour happens, we’ll see.”
Strong reactions to the Tupac hologram’s debut performance last weekend fueled rumors of a full-blown tour, including hologram representations of other artists. Previous reports had suggested a hologram of deceased West Coast rapper Nate Dogg was also scheduled for Coachella, and Dre has mentioned Jimi Hendrix and Marvin Gaye as two artists he’d like to see in hologram form.
