Description
THE REAL DEALmanufactured in Providence, Rhode Island U.S.A.
since 1942
At the onset of World War II, the
Colonial Knife Co.
(Providence, R.I.) was awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy to manufacture a freshly configured "Mark 1" type Deck Knife. Although similar to other designs of that era, the Colonial offered several advantages for naval combat, survival and rescue:
Hardened AISI 1075 steel for superior edge keeping and durability
Non-reflective, Parkerized "blackout" finish
Molded polymer handle (scale) for improved non-slip grip
Ability to be boiled for emergency sterilization/field surgery
Secure scabbard (sheath) with lanyard/leg strap
Today, after 78+ years of production, the Mark 1 remains a very solid and useful knife, it's not just for show. The Parkerized "blackout blade" is non-reflective, specially hardened hi-carbon steel (AISI-1075/Rockwell C60), extremely sharp right out of the package.
The grooved scale (handle) is molded of Tenite™ polymer, which provides a secure, non-slip grip - even with gloves or when wet. Unlike wood or stacked leather scales, the entire knife can be boiled for emergency sterilization/field surgery.
The scabbard (sheath) is genuine leather with machine stitching plus rivets for durability. Wide loop fits belts up to 3-inches wide. Per military specs, each one is stamped USN and includes a braided lanyard/leg strap.

As with other tools aboard the ship, it can be occasionally wiped down with a light coat of oil to prevent corrosion during long term storage.
