    Description

From the Tucson estate of a noted mid century American scientist is this 1950's pair of crafted sterling silver "floating" rectangle cufflinks, clearly promoting a post war modernist aesthetic. Consider them as wearable art - each face a 3-D stacking of two identical silver rectangles, spaced to give the illusion of one geometric shape floating above the other. Designed for an audience of forward thinking and apparently debonair cognoscenti during the Eisenhower administration, this particular duo  in fact saw cuff duty with the director of American endeavors for the International Geophysical Year 1957-1958 (think Explorer 1, Vanguard 1, and the establishment of NASA among many other relevant accomplishments).  The look here exemplifies what "modern" once was - and for some of us still is. Though unsigned, I'm fairly certain they were originally acquired in the Washington D.C. / Baltimore area. The toggles show "STER. / PAT. 2472958" - that patent number from 1949. Weight is very good for the form at about 23.3 total grams on my portable digital scale, so no skimping on precious metal.  Condition is physically quite fine overall, with a distinct aura of time to the surfaces. Old wear to the protective lacquer finish and and toning to the exposed silver validates the lengthy history.  I have avoided any refreshing or 'improving", though for use removal of that old lacquer and a cleaning might be the way to go - you want that done, you do it.  The toggle springs are still good and ready for duty. All said, the appearance is of something greatly favored during the period and then stored away untouched for six or so decades.  A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Face size of each is about 23/32 in. horizontal and 5/8 in. vertical. I'm not sure what else to say, so there you are.
