--> Platts Cutlery Co Long Blade Bowie Knife with Wood Handles, circa 1890 - 1905--> The Platts family made knives at various locations in New York state from about 1890 to 1905, when they merged with the Case Cutlery Company. It's rather difficult to fine information about their old firm. This is an old bowie style knife marked PLATTS on the left side of the guard. The right side of the guard is marked "Clancy," a prior owner's name. The "Clancy" name appears to be scratched on, while the Platts name is in more proper writing. The knife has a blade length of 7 & 3/8 inches, and an overall length of 12 & 1/2 inches. The blade is 1/16 of an inch thick. The knife has dark wood checkered handles (possibly ebony?) and what looks like a pewter or aluminum guard. The knife does not have a sheath. This appears to be an uncommon knife.
CONDITION: The blade is sharp. It has some visible scratches and pitting on both sides. The wood handles are in good condition. The Platts name has been worn down some, but is easily readable when you hold the knife. (The T's are worn at the top.) There is some discoloration at the back part of the metal guard on both sides. The knife does not have a sheath.
