Description
Outstanding, Western Cutlery, Boulder, Colorado, model 39 hunting knife with original "cracked-ice" celluloid handles. This example is tang stamped: J. C Higgins, which indicates that this knife was a contract knife, made by Western for Montgomery Ward. circa 1950's. You can tell that this knife was made by Western by the inclusion of the Western patent number for the "double tang handle" stamped below the J. C. Higgins name. The knife itself shows little or no wear, with shiny blade showing no signs of rust, pitting, excessive sharpening, or grinder marks.
The handle is "cracked ice" celluloid which has a light yellow surface texture which looks like cracked ice, above a thin white liner, and a thick layer of "root beer" colored celluloid.
The handles show no shrinkage, deterioration, or celluloid breakdown.
The sheath for these model 39's was frequently a laced, fold over leather sheath. This one is dyed "ox blood" which is common for these knives. The sheath is excellent with working snap (plain nickel silver snap). The lacing on this knife appears to be a smooth tan rawhide. instead of dyed white glossy leather. The rawhide contrasts nicely with the ox blood sheath color.
This knife would make the centerpiece of any Western cutlery collection.
Rare to find these knives in any condition, especially with great celluloid handles showing no deterioration.
